Join the Mountainside Volunteer Fire Department
The Mountainside Fire Department is ALWAYS accepting applications for new membership! Now, more than ever before, we need your help! Membership amongst volunteer fire departments nationwide is on a steep decline. Understaffed volunteer firehouses are an extremely dangerous risk to the community. To avoid this risk, we urge all willing and committed individuals to join us and give back to the community with one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have. The skills you will learn as a volunteer firefighter are invaluable. It may be easier to become a volunteer firefighter than you think!
What is the Next Step?
We invite ALL people interested in membership to stop by our firehouse on any Monday evening throughout the year (with the exception of federally observed holidays). Our firehouse is located at 210 New Providence Rd. in Mountainside, 07092. Every Monday evening we meet at 7:30PM for either a fire company business meeting, training exercise, or work period, where firehouse chores are completed.

The Membership Process
Once you have completed an initial application with the MFD, you will be required to attend at least one fire company business meeting, one training exercise, and one department work period on Monday evenings. Once you have demonstrated your continued interest in the department by attending these three events, your application will be submitted to the Mountainside Police Department for a routine background investigation.
Upon successful completion of the background investigation, you will be contacted to complete a medical exam with the borough doctor, with all costs covered by the borough. With the Doctor's approval, your application will be presented before the town council. During the council meeting, completed fire department applications will be voted on and approved and new members will then be appointed as probationary firefighters with the Mountainside Fire Department.
